Press Release

For immediate release 01/03/02

Time is running out

Time is running out to join the most exciting off road challenge in Britain, the Goodyear British Off Road Championship.

New for 2002 the championship contains five two day, high mileage comp safaris on some of the best off roading terrain in the UK. With the emphasis strongly on good value for money and fun, the two-day event format allows for some close racing as well as the opportunity to relax and meet up with friends and colleagues from across the UK.

Each venue will have on site facilities including, toilets, a well stocked bar and some first class catering. On top of that there will be over 80 miles of racing every weekend. The venues have been chosen for their durability, and courses will be designed to be flowing and fun. The courses will not be vehicle breakers, but instead focus on driving skill, to obtain the fastest times.

Many top competitors have already signed up, and the production classes are already looking to be the strongest ever!

Entries close on March 12th. As an added incentive, anyone who gets their championship entry in before the 6th March (including all those who already have) will be entered into a free prize draw for a set of Goodyear Wrangler MT/Rs the control tyre for the championship.

To do the entire Goodyear British Off Road Championship and be in with a shout of lifting one of the MSA's prestigious British titles, it costs only £300, for the whole year. That equates to just £30 entry fee per day. All events count towards the championship, with no dropped scores and you must be registered prior to the first round.

If you cannot commit to the whole championship or would like to build up your experience for next year then the individual events are open to clubman competitors at £50 per day (or £100 per weekend) or if you commit, in advance, to doing all the clubmans events the fee is half price at just £500.

Goodyear MSA British Off Road Championship

  • April 20/21 Tunbridge Wells - A testing multi-terrain course providing a unique and privileged opportunity to compete across one of the finest country estates in Kent.
  • June 15/16 Leeds - Another new site to off road motorsport and another new challenge.
  • July 27/28 Perth, Scotland - A week after the fabulous Scottish Hillrally, the perfect opportunity to enjoy Scotland at its best.
  • Sept 21/22 Swindon - Likened to the fast and furious terrain used on the Southern Hillrallies, hold on tight!
  • Oct 26/27 Glynneath - Where better to end the toughest of British motorsport championships than at the extensive Seven Sisters complex. Blending Rally GB tracks with rutted fire breaks there is always a surprise at Glynneath and you ain't seen nothing yet!

Note: In order to help out the AWDC who were struggling with their early autumn dates and sites, the date of the penultimate round in Swindon has moved one week later to 21-22 September. The organisers don't anticipate any further date changes.

Don't forget that all of the latest news about the 2002 Goodyear British Off Road Championship can be found on the championship website: www.britishoffroadchampionship.co.uk

Like all motorsport in the UK the Goodyear British Off Road Championship relies heavily on volunteer marshals for the events to run smoothly.  Everyone is welcome and training can be supplied.

Together with main sponsors Goodyear, and with the support of Ford SVO the British Off Road Championship are holding a marshals training day in South Wales on the weekend of the 23rd-24th March. Details are yet to be finalised but the day is aimed at those who might be interested in marshalling on this year's Goodyear British Off Road Championship. The training will specialise in marshalling for the championship, but is nonetheless open to everyone and the skills acquired will be useful in other branches of the sport. For more details please contact Terry Day on 01635 864833 (marshals@britishoffroadchampionship.co.uk) or check out the website www.britishoffroadchampionship.co.uk

If you want to find out what all the fuss is about, then please come and watch in April. Spectators are welcome. Again keep an eye on the website for further details.
