Press Release

Championship postponed

07/06/01

It is with great regret that the organisers of the Goodyear British Off Road Championship have decided to cancel this year's competition.

Championship organiser Selwyn Kendrick said, "It is sad for the organisers, competitors and landowners alike, but having canvassed opinion it seems that the most sensible thing would be to cancel the championship for this year and put all our resources into a proper effort in 2002."

Foot-and-mouth remains a real problem in the UK and off road motorsport by its very nature relies heavily on agricultural land.

Many of the sites that were originally earmarked for the championship now have the disease on them, or are nearby to cases.

Spokesman for the Goodyear sponsored series, Henry Webster added, "It would be a shame to run a half hearted competition and it would demean the title."

"Sites are still limited, and it would be wrong to put undue pressure on land owners."

"We hope to run several more events this year, on the same basis as the recent 4x4 Festival of Wales, but we didn't think it was right to base a British championship on just one or two venues."

Goodyear remain committed to the championship and both Ford and Mitsubishi are showing continued interest.
