Kershaw cracks it!

28/10/02

Huddesfield's Richard Kershaw is the new Goodyear British Off Road Champion, following a commanding win at the final round at Driffield, East Yorkshire.

Richard took the win by a substantial two minute margin following a breathtakingly close event in which any one of the top ten were in with a chance of taking the championship honours.

An on form Trevor Milner took second place in his Milner R4 Race Truck, the rough and wet conditions suiting his closed cab and independently sprung motor. Trevor was not without challenge, as the other championship contenders marveled at the pace of leader Richard Kershaw. 2000 champion Paul Choat showed that he had lost none of his pace with a series of fastest times in the final laps to bring him within a matter of seconds of Trevor going into the final lap. Trevor put in his fastest lap of the day for the last one, Paul bettered him by fourteen seconds around the five mile track, but missed out on second place by a mere eight seconds.

In the production vehicle class, champion elect, Colin Read and the works Mitsubishi Shogun Pinin was pipped to the post by his main rival Nik Ward in his Suzuki Vitara. Tony Walmsley took the modified production class following rival Paul Clackett's retirement with a broken chassis on his Range Rover.

"We came here with the intention of winning." said a clearly chuffed Richard Kershaw at the end of the event. He was referring to the final event, but could easily have been surmising the attitude by which he approached his near perfect championship season.
