When the
remaining single track road between Salen and
Tobermory is turned into two lanes, the journey between
Craignure and Tobermory will be quicker. But one Mull
community might lose out …
There is one big problem
The Council plans to build a causeway bringing the two-lane road
into the north end of Salen, across the bay, squeezed between the existing
one-storey cottages and the sewerage works, demolishing the public toilets. The
Council believes this would require traffic lights on either side of Salen’s
narrow bridge.
We
don’t think this is the answer
The traffic lights will cause congestion in Salen, while doing
nothing to address the traffic calming measures needed throughout the village.
If the causeway goes ahead and the traffic lights are later removed because of
the problems caused by them, Salen will become a drive-through village in 20
miles of fast-moving traffic, and a lot less safe and attractive. The planned
causeway is 4 metres (13ft) high and 8 metres (26ft) across, and would create a
huge and permanent scar across Salen’s beautiful bay.
Is the Council listening?
RAGS (Road Action Group Salen) are fighting the current proposal
of a causeway and traffic lights in Salen. RAGS have drawn up a plan which does
not require a causeway or traffic lights, which advocates sensible traffic
calming measures and is vastly cheaper than the Council’s plan. RAGS is not
about delaying the process of the road - we aim to “Keep Mull Moving”. But when
we wrote to the Council on 11th December 2006 we received an
acknowledgment of receipt but no appropriate response. Recently, with local
Councillors working on our behalf, we have been given the opportunity to present
our case to Argyll & Bute Council in the autumn.
