JEARY’S SWEET SHOP

Jearys

A few doors away from the Grosvenor was Jeary’s,
Tobacconists and Confectioners, at Number 41.
What a mouth-watering selection of sweets and
chocolates they sold – and Ice Cream throughout the
year! Then there was the usual display of cigarettes,
cigars accompanied by the smell of pipe tobacco.

“Although I used to enjoy a quiet smoke – mainly
filter-tipped cigarettes – by this time I had ‘given
up’ as there were more-pressing priorities: Jelly
Tots and Dolly Mixtures for our little son and,
sometimes, Mint Imperials and Liquorice Allsorts
for us! Probably a lot healthier than smoking, but
rather bad for our teeth!”

Jeary’s was on the left-hand side of the alleyway that
led to the parish church, with Marjoram’s on the
other side. Now, of course, there is a Travel Agent’s
where Jeary’s shop was: Broadland Travel offering
a ‘World Choice’ of holidays.

Broadland Travel for a World Choice, but no cigarettes or sweets!
