Next
door, at Number 14, Market Place, was
Leeders, a lovely shop, selling all manners of things
from notepaper and envelopes to brassware, fancy
goods and pens and pencils. They also sold toys,
how glad I was that we had a little son as the
Scalextric looked very appealing and I just had to
have one for our son, you understand!
I was, of course, overruled on that one, so we
settled for a squeaky rubber fox instead, which
Julian immediately began to throw out of his
pram. Perhaps he would have preferred a little
electric slot-racing car instead! However, a few months later we did
buy a Scalextric set, with racing Minis, from Randells of Cromer!
Leeders advertised gifts for all occasions, and it was
a veritable Aladdins Cave of delights packed on
two floors. It has to be said, the Airfix kits always
received the best of my attention, although I have to
admit being quite intrigued with the Spirograph and
promptly bought one! It was an investment at the
time as, within a few years, it kept our children quiet
for many an hour with all its squiggles and shapes.
Sadly, Leeders is no more, replaced by Country
Pets, selling pet foodstuff, anglers tackle and plastic
house-name signs, just to mention a few.
