RACKSTRAW’S

Rackstraws

Leaving the Market Place behind us for a short while,
we stroll past the Market Cross and head into Market
Street towards the traffic lights.

“Rackstraw’s Delicatessen, at Number 5, sold so
many fine cheeses it was always difficult to decide
which to buy! As for their wines – what a selection,
but, alas, we weren’t into wine in those days.
However, we did purchase a half bottle of Rosé and
receive a miniature bottle free-of-charge on one
occasion. Dare I admit it; we took our ‘sampler’
into the War Memorial Park and quite enjoyed it!”

Rackstraw’s proud boast was their out-of-date
service, the personal touch, that had, in the late ’60s,
all but disappeared under the relentless advance of
progress – the supermarkets. Rackstraw’s offered
good food, fine wines and a counter service, and
were still pleased to deliver the customer’s order to
their door. With online ordering, it seems this service
may be undergoing a revival. Alas, not the same can
be said for Number 5 Market Street as the once
proud premises of E P Rackstraw Ltd now remains
closed, derelict and forlorn.

What a sad end to a famous shop!
