Lets
start our stroll down Memory Lane, or rather the Market
Place, just around the corner from New Road and looking towards the
ancient
Market Cross. F Randell & Co, Ironmongers, were at No. 5
Market Place as
well as having an ironworks at the St Nicholas Works.
It
is was very imposing building, and you could get just about everything
you wanted there: from garden tools, chicken wire, galvanised bathtubs
and water butts, to light-switches, electrical wiring and 40 watt bulbs
the
list was endless it seemed.
Today,
its a much different picture with The Drugstore occupying
the
premises, selling all manner of ready-prepared pills and potions straight
off
the shelf for the discerning customer with aches and pains to ease.
Fortunately, little attempt has been made to modernise the imposing
facade
and shop front, which appears, more or less, as it would have done in
the late
1960s when we lived in the town.
