MASTERS & SCHOLARS 1953

Part of an old school photograph.

The Headmaster, Lieut. Col. K N Marshall (centre) and his entourage; from
left to right: Mr Mercer, ?, Mr Magdaleno (Maggie), Mr Skerret-Rogers,
Mr Cowper, K N Marshall, ?, Mr Mattocks, Humphrey Grantham-Hill,
Mr Atkinson (Voco), Mr Cutting (Kiffy). How many Masters and scholars
can you recognise?

“We were marched out of our form rooms and instructed to climb onto
trestles and not to pull funny faces at the camera. The photographer hid
under a black hood and then, pointing his tripod-held camera at the
far left (or was it right?) of the assembled school, set it in motion.
With much whirring the ancient camera panned along and took a
panoramic view of us all.”

Whilst we were all encouraged to wear a necktie some, due to the warm
weather, did not. They were instructed to fold their shirt collars over
their blazer collars – such the tradition at Paston!

“Mr Mercer (Joe) was my Art Master and instrumental in gaining a place
for me at Norwich Art School; Magdaleno, the PT Master, left a lasting
impression on me as he did on a great many others, no doubt! Good old
Mr Skerret-Rogers, who tried (but failed) to teach me the rudiments of
English with a Norfolk accent. ‘Voco’ Atkinson taught Latin, which I
enjoyed immensely, speaking it far better than my native tongue! Whilst
‘Kiffy’ Cutting had us singing like angels; Men of Harlech, Down By the
Ash Grove and Lass of Richmond Hill. How I wanted to sing some Elvis
Presley numbers instead!”

Unfortunately, due to space limitations, this photograph is merely a small
section of the full size print showing all of us 350 boys!
