THE FISHERMEN’S BEACH

The fishermen's beach.

There were two main beaches from which the fishermen would
launch their crab boats; the East Beach at the bottom of Beach
Road, and here on the West Beach at the foot of the West
Gangway, or Fishermen’s Slope as it was sometimes called.
Here we can see some of the crab boats, and other paraphernalia
associated with their trade, at rest on the flints of the foreshore,
whilst, further over, two beaches away, can be seen more crab
boats beached on the sands of the East Beach. At this time, the
Red Lamp, a famous landmark, is still to be seen against the sea
wall at the top of the promenade slope. The light from this lamp
was visible out at sea and something for the homeward-bound
fishermen to aim for in bad visibility.
