UK 405-Line Television Transmitters

Background

The United Kingdom was the first country to start a regular television service in the mid-1930s. The pictures were of course monochrome and used only 405 horizontal lines as opposed to the more usual 625 lines today. The frequencies used - in the VHF range - were at the frontier of the radio technology of the time but look somewhat low today.

The Second World War interrupted the service but afterwards transmissions resumed and transmitter coverage across the UK was extended. The 40MHz to 60MHz range became established for this use and became known as "Band One" (BI). For reasons probably not unconnected with cost, the original 405-line standard was kept for these post-war transmissions, even though other European television services were going for other standards, mainly using 625 lines.

With the success of television in the Fifties and the decision to allow the start of commercial television further frequencies between 175MHz and 215MHz were released, becoming known as "Band Three" (BIII). Colour television was also on the agenda around this time and tests were carried out to see which system should be adopted. PAL became the favoured method of transmission and at the same time it was decided to move up to the technically superior 625-line system.

More frequencies were made available to enable the start of colour television. They were in the UHF band between 470MHz and 860MHz and these became known as "Band Four" and "Band Five" (BIV, BV). At the same time the decision was taken not to re-devlop the existing VHF transmissions but to move all UK television to UHF. This was the death knell for VHF television which finally ceased in the mid-1980s.

It is interesting to speculate how things might have been if the UK had continued to use VHF for television coverage as with most other countries in the world. Almost total Coverage of the country was possible using these frequencies with only a fraction of the number of transmitters needed at UHF. Reception of the Crystal Palace transmitter (and its Alexandra Palace predecessor) on Channel 1 were renowned for their world-wide coverage during times of high sunspot activity.

Alternatively, these conditions, and the regular periods of Sporadic 'E' activity in the summer months could cause difficult reception and interference for local viewers here in the UK. Also, the exclusive use of UHF meant that for good reception four or five terrestrial television channels only one antenna was needed as opposed to up to three - one for each band - if the VHF transmissions had been re-engineered.

The UK 405-Line Transmitter Network

This list is included for academic interest only. In the days of 405-line television there was little cooperation between the BBC and the ITA (Independent Television Authority) in terms of site sharing. In some areas viewers needed to point their antennae in two different directions for the two services that they were able to receive. In practice, as most transmissions were in separate VHF bands anyway this was not too much of a problem.

The list below shows that most sites had only one television service asscoiated with each transmitter. Most main transmitters used vertical polarisation and most relays used horizontal, although as is common today at UHF good use was made of either to help limit the amount of interference from other transmitters on the same channel.
