A recent broadcasting development in the UK is the introduction of "Restricted Service Licence" television stations. These stations are similar to their radio counterparts except that, whereas the radio stations are licenced for a continuous transmission period of up to 30 days, the television stations are licenced for up to 2 years operation. This reflects the much higher start-up costs and the greater difficulty in getting potential viewers to tune in their tv sets. Unless stated, it is assumed that transmissions are in colour but without teletext or nicam sound.
As well as those listed below, applications have been received, but frequencies not found, for stations in Belfast, Bradford, Cardiff, City of London, Coleraine/Portrush/Portstewart, East Lindsey, Limavady/Dungiven, Lincoln, Newcastle upon Tyne, Windsor/Slough/Maidenhead, Reading, Swindon, Salisbury, Strabane and Winchester.
