The Isle of Man Steam Railway developed during the latter part of the 19th century, to around fifty route miles, survived the two world wars and continued against increasing competition from road transport until the 1960's. The Marquis of Ailsa made a brave and expensive attempt to save the railway from total oblivion but in the event was only able to continue operating the Douglas to Port Erin line. The Manx Government took over in the 1970's and the line now operates as a major tourist attraction.

This book tells this fascinating story with a well written text and around 110 photographs, many previously unpublished, a detailed locomotive fleet list and a chapter on the various types of rolling stock that have operated on the railway over the years.
