1995 saw the centenary of the unique electric tramway that runs from Laxey to the summit of the Isle of Man’s tallest mountain, Snaefell. This book provides a concise history of the line, complemented by over 60 photographs, from the opening until today.

The idea of building a railway to the summit first surfaced in 1888 when it was mooted by J B Fell, inventor of the ‘Fell Incline Railway System’. In 1895 the 3ft 6in gauge electric tramway was opened.

The Snaefell Mountain Railway has been in regular service since then, conveying summer visitors to the summit of the mountain, which on a clear day affords unforgettable views. The original tramcars are still in service, albeit refurbished over the years.

This book will be of great interest to those fascinated by the Isle of Man’s wonderful transport heritage. It will also provide a tangible reminder for the many thousands who use the tramway to journey in comfort each year to the highest point on the island.
