Welcome

Welcome to the web site of the Family and Local History Indexing Group ("FLHIG"), an independent not-for-profit UK-based organisation.

History of the Group

FLHIG was formed in June 2004 from the former Genealogical Group of the Society of Indexers  (SIGG), continuing with similar aims.

SIGG had is beginnings in April 1993. Initially all its members were also members of the Society of Indexers, however with an increasing proportion of members who were not also members of the Society the decision had to be made to reform as a non-affiliated group. FLHIG retains association status with the Society of Indexers.

Aims

The aim is to provide a forum for the discussion of topics of common interest to those concerned with the indexing of all genealogical materials whether these are original records (such as parish records, wills, marriage allegations, newspapers etc), or genealogical books and periodicals.

FLHIG is also interested in attracting those working with indexing in other related fields such as oral history, local history and population studies which overlap both in personnel and materials with family history.

There are many people in the British Isles who are engaged in the indexing of family history materials but who do not have any training in the art of indexing. FLHIG aims to bring together those indexers who have specialist knowledge, as well as those embarking on family history or local history projects in which indexing is an important part, so that a body of expertise may be formed, which may then be shared with others.

Indexing any of the following is considered to be within the scope of FLHIG:

  • general books on genealogy
  • collections of (historical) documents
  • catalogues of books on genealogy and related subjects
  • works on local history
  • family histories including individual biographies
  • periodicals on family history, including family history society journals
  • bibliographies of works on family history
  • works on using computers in family history
  • registers of births, baptisms, marriages, deaths and burials
  • marriage and other licences
  • census, tax and other public records
  • court rolls
  • legal records
  • ecclesiastical records including tithes
  • wills and administrations
  • monumental inscriptions
  • land records
  • heraldry, royalty, nobility, gentry
  • trades and occupations

Projects

Many members are involved in one or more individual genealogical indexing projects. These projects are not described on this site except to the extent that they are referred to in articles. However, in furtherance of the Group's aims to aid good indexing practice in genealogy, we present here some group projects whose purpose is to aid genealogical indexers generally. To learn more click on the button marked "Projects" above.
