After four years of grueling warfare, President Harry S Truman decided the only way to end the war was to use the most advanced weaponry available: the atomic bomb. The 'Little Boy' with a core of uranium 235, was dropped over Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. The more sophisticated and more deadly 'Fat Man' was dropped over Nagasaki three days later. The bomb was ten feet long, five feet wide, 10,000 pounds, with plutonium at its core. Of the 286,000 people living in Nagasaki at the time of the blast, 74,000 were killed and another 75,000 sustained severe injuries. Shortly thereafter, the Japanese surrendered.Carlinhos Brown. Tom Wolde's legendary 1968 book entitled The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test chronicled the cross-country journey of Ken Kesey, his Merry Pranksters and their experiments with LSD. (Kesey was involved in early government LSD testing and would later write One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest) The soundtrack for this scene was provided by The Grateful Dead, whose early performances are also covered in Wolfe's book. The most famous and vocal advocate of LSD use was Dr. Timothy Leary whose early experiments got him dismissed from the faculty of Harvard University. His 1964 book, The Psychedelic Experience, started the entire trip and unlike Wolfe, who never indulged, Leary's writing were cleary based on his own experiences. He famously coined the phrase Turn on, tune in, drop out. This amazing cast of characters all somehow found themselves in the same place - though not always at the same time - some fifteen years later. That improbable place was The Tomorrow Show, where The Grateful Dead, Ken Kesey, Dr. Timothy Leary (in a rare TV appearance) and Tom Wolfe all talked to Tom Snyder.
