Classic Steam Train Collection - Green Arrow, at Woolworths
In what is believed to be the most intensive coverage of a single steam railtour, a team of professional TV cameramen follow Green Arrow to the West Country. But it was a railtour that Green Arrow was never scheduled to make. The original plan was to take a Gresley A4 to Plymouth. Filming has already started aboard 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley when mechanical faults ruled the engine out. As luck would have it, the only survivor of the V2 class, Green Arrow, had just come back from a major surgery and she came to the rescue in spectacular fashion. No-one could have imagined the volcanic efforts the big 2-6-2 engine would have to produce, particularly on the infamous Devon banks, in order to reach Plymouth. Heart-stopping action comes from the footplate crew as they worked extremely hard in wet conditions to overcome water trouble at Newbury, coal difficulties at Exeter, a leaking brake pipe at Cockwood Harbour and a disastrous red light at the foot of the Rattery Bank. Despite this, Green Arrow became the first V2-class locomotive to reach Plymouth and in doing so upheld the honour of the LNER in the West Country. This brilliant programme reveals the drama of steam traction at its most volcanic.

At the time of release only 18 minutes of the footage contained in this DVD has been seen in the west; despite it being used as damning prosecution evidence at the Nuremburg Trials. Recorded from January - February 1945 by a Soviet film crew attached to the 1st Ukrainian Front, the programme tells the story of the liberation of the Auschwitz camp. Captain Alexander Vorontsov, a member of the camera crew, describes the emotions that he and his comrades felt as they were confronted by the appalling scenes at Hitler's infamous death camp. In the interest of preserving the original character of the material, the footage has been left unedited, emphasising the truly shocking nature of the crimes recorded. 02 Dachau & Sachsenhausen: Whilst Hitler sough the answers to his Jewish problem more and more centres of containment sprung up throughout Nazi occupied Europe. Two such camps were Dachau and Sachsenhausen, and although perhaps not such recognisable names as Auschwitz, they were no less crucial in the persecution and extermination of the European Jews. Under the watchful eye of Heinrich Himmler, head of the SS and Hitler's right hand man, a series of containment, transit and death camps were built within Europe, to systematically cleanse all those people considered inferior by the Third Reich. With the liberation of these two camps in April 1945, the true extent of man's cruelty to his fellow man would be revealed; the untold dead, inhumane treatment and squalid conditions would be laid bare for the entire world to see. 03 Ravensbruck & Buchenwald: Women from more than 20 countries were incarcerated between 1939 and 1945 in the Ravensbruck concentration camp in Germany. They were subjected to gross maltreatment, humiliation and some were tortured to death all in the name of the Third Reich. The purpose of this documentary is to keep alive the memory of the fate suffered by these women and the inhumane treatment inflicted by their captors. After being established in the German town of Weimar in the summer of 1937, Buchenwald was to develop into one of the largest concentration camps in Germany, with approximately 250,000 inmates from some 35 different countries. More than 50,000 were to die during the reign of terror, by torture, deliberate starvation and systematic culling. Buchenwald was eventually to be liberated by US troops in April 1945.
