Weathering

LNER timber post upper quadrant signal - 7mm/1ft.

Starter at clear
The prototype for this signal was the starter which was on the station platform at Wragby in Lincolnshire.
This picture shows the signal installed in the low level passenger station on my layout.
The signal is "off" and a parcels train is departing.
The white diamond tells the driver that he doesn't need to obey rule 55, as the station is track circuited.
wooden post and brass fittings The signal post is beech with most of the fittings of brass. Short lengths of brass wire soldered into the fittings are pushed into holes drilled in the post. Seen here are the arm pivot, the lamp bracket and the rule 55 exemption diamond.
base plug and socket plate
The signal is fitted with a plug-in base made of brass tube.
Shown here is the plug fitted into one of a pair of socket plates. The wooden post is fixed into the larger tube - the smaller tube forms a guide for the operating wire.
signal pulled off, seen from behind
Two photographs of the model taken outside on a sunny March day.

The signal has not been weathered.
signal at danger
All the fittings on the signal are metal. Most are brass but the post cap and lamp are white-metal castings. The only adhesives on the model were used to fasten the post cap and the spectacle "glass".
