The diary kept by Roystonian
Jack Halstead during the First World War is a unique document which was
brought in to the Museum some time ago by a member of his family and now
forms part of the Museum's permanent collection. Jack was a gunner and a gifted
amateur artist, and the diary is copiously illustrated with his pen and
ink drawings. His
matter-of-fact and unvarnished account of
his experiences is more impressive than many
more dramatic ones; the full horror of life in the trenches comes
across very vividly. The book is a testimony to Jack's
immense skill in depicting
both the
grim reality and the humorous
moments
of life in the trenches during "the war to end all wars".
Jack's War can be purchased at the Museum, price £19.95.
