THE FRIENDS OF ROYSTON AND DISTRICT MUSEUM

The Friends of Royston and District Museum, formed in 1985, is a registered charity which seeks to assist, promote and foster interest in the Museum and to improve the facilities it offers.

Funds raised by the Friends are used to assist the Museum in a variety of ways.  When the Museum was refurbished in 2001 a Friends enjoy Jack's War - one of our booksgrant was made for materials to help with the new displays. The Friends have recently provided a scanner  and a digital camera which it is hoped will enable a satisfactory catalogue to be made of the Museum’s collection of pictures and also improve the facilities available to visitors in wheelchairs by presenting material on display on the upper floor on a computer screen downstairs.  They have also provided 27 re-usable frames which were used for the first time at the exhibition of the etchings of E Herbert Whydale last June.  The Friends also funded the publication of a booklet on the etchings.

All members receive a quarterly newsletter and invitations to Private Views and social events (the picture above shows two of the Friends at the Private View before the 'Jack's War' exhibition in October 2005).  The Friends also produce a range of exclusive stationery items based on the Museum's collection and on various places of historic interest in the town. Some members choose to help in the Museum when it is open to the public, with the satisfaction of supporting a valuable asset of the town.  Others with embroidery skills come regularly to work on the Museum's Royston Tapestry project, and the container garden in the courtyard offers scope to enthusiastic gardeners.

The Friends have also published the following:

D P King, The Year War Broke Out (Royston 1991)
     M K Lawrence, Camp 29 Royston West (Royston 1991)
Mervyn Thompson and Geoffrey J Allgood, Flora    of Therfield  Heath and the Mordens (Royston 1993)
Christine J Whitbourn, The Etchings of E Herbert Whydale  1886-1952 (Royston 2006)
