BRIANTS AVENUE

Did you know that Briants Avenue, parallel to Star Road at the far eastern end of Gosbrook Road, was named after a Mr Briant who was the builder there?

We have recently had an email from one of his grandsons, George, now aged 86, who has lived in Winnipeg, Canada, since early boyhood, and who is seeking information about his grandfather.

Houses of the same era in Star Rd .

George writes,

"My father, Sidney Herbert Briant was born Sept. 15th 1891. He came to Canada about 1914, but was called back to the Territorial Army when war started. He was wounded and gassed.

"I was born in 1916 at Erith, Kent, during a zeppelin raid.

"Mum worked in a munitions plant; afterwards we lived in Caversham until coming to Canada when I was 5.

"Other brothers of my father were Len with his wife and daughter Daphne born about 1938, and also Bert. My Gram lived with her son Len then. There was also a cousin Ron Castle."

Editor:- I estimate that Builder Briant was working in the Briants Avenue and Star Road area about 1880 to 1910. So I have sent our correspondent a couple of photos of houses of that era which may well have been built by his grandfather. He is searching for more information about his grandfather, and I should be glad to pass on any details that present residents of Caversham may have.
