From Malcolm Buckler in the Isle of Man
My father made sports cars called "Bucklers" from 1947 to the 1960's.
These were all designed at 85 Woodcote Road.
Some were made at his engineering company in 67 Caversham Road but most
of the assembly was completed at the works in Heath Hill Road, Crowthorne. |
About 400 cars resulted and The Buckler Car Register caters
for existing owners world wide, organises meets and publishes a
quarterly illustrated newsletter.
My website for these is http://groups.msn.com/BucklerCars |
|
Other cars made in Caversham were the H.E. made by Elliotts in the late 1920's-30's
and similar to a sports Bentley and the "British", made 1905 to 1907,
which I think was manufactured in the old Caversham Motors premises, in Church Street.
There is some car history on http://www.caversham.org.uk/aboutCav/intro.htm
and a 1949 publicity photo of a Buckler with Caversham Bridge behind. |

I enclose a photo of Carole and me,
last year (2002), in our early Buckler Mark 5 . |

Another area, which should be covered, are the wonderful boats,
hand-crafted by Freebody's of Caversham. A search on the web should find
information, as I think they are still made, though maybe
not in Caversham any more?
