Can you imagine cows being driven
through Caversham?

Well, this is a sight that R.A. remembers seeing
several times a year in the early part of this century.

He tells me "When I was 6 years old I moved with my family to live in Grosvenor Road, on the side which backed onto the open fields. This was in 1919.

I well remember the occasions when about 100 head of cattle would be gathered from the outlying farms into May`s field which was just behind our house.
(Later on houses were built on this field, and thus Mayfield Drive was named.)

After spending the night on May`s field, these cattle would slowly be driven out of the field in the morning, and down Henley Road, with much shouting and barking from men and dogs respectively. Completely filling the width of the road and stopping all other traffic for perhaps a couple of hours, they proceeded right through Caversham village, over Caversham Bridge, along Caversham Road and under the Railway bridge.
You can guess their destination! Up Abattoirs Road they very reluctantly ran, with dogs barking at their heels. How fortunate they couldn`t read the road-name!"
