Jottings of old Caversham I have just discovered your website.
Your "Old Lady" article
attracted me to you from a Google search.
I was born at 85 Woodcote Road, just after the war
and remained there into the 1960's. | |

Here is my photo of St Peters Hill School;
my elder brother was there with Ally Khan, now the Aga Khan.
He was also there when it was machine gunned.
I was there when they still used gas lights (am I that old?).
I am sending you this picture of St Peter's Hill School,
as I remember it. Maybe one of your readers
could provide a better one or a more comprehensive set.
It took me years to get this one, so I think they are a bit rare.
No one at Reading Museum had heard of it
and they wanted me
to send them £12 to find out !! So I refuse to give them
any of my "valuable" memories unless they pay me
£12 for each one !

I posted quite a lot of stuff on St Peter's Hill School on
Friends Reunited website a couple of years back.
A lady, who had also posted an entry, said that
she lived opposite the school, at Treetops, I think.
(Editor: Was this Mrs Pamela Pick?)
Our milk was delivered by horse from Blagraves Farm
and there was still a baker delivering by horse.
The last frog pond I remember, was still with spawn and frogs
in about 1963. It was on the right of Woodcote Road,
going up the road and just past Richmond road,
close to the road in a field. In earlier days
I had collected tadpoles from it to take to St Peters Hill School.
When I have a little more time, I will send you
a lot more data about life in Caversham in the 1940's to 60's
and you can pick from it what you wish.
You are welcome to my memories, if you have space
but I don't want to bore anyone.
(Editor: I told him how congested traffic is in Caversham,
and he compares it with the Isle of Man, where he lives now - viz.)
