Volunteers at work!

If you are looking for interesting voluntary work in pleasant sociable surroundings, you can help by joining our team of Volunteers. Most of our activities take place at the Studio at the Weybridge Hospital and Primary Care Centre in the middle of Weybridge. You may want to check out:

* The summary of our Weekly Sequence Of Activities or

* How we go about our Monthly Talking Magazine

to see in what type of jobs you might be interested. Do not worry, however, if you think that you don’t have special skills for any of these. We always provide comprehensive on-the-job training and supervision by our more experienced Volunteers until such a time as you feel completely confident.

The main personal qualities that are helpful are a degree of enthusiasm, a happy, sociable disposition, the motivation to produce a job well done and, of course, an interest and sympathy with visually impaired people. You will always be working with two or three other Volunteer (except for the Scriptwriting where this is unnecessary).

The amount of time/frequency devoted by our Volunteers to the EaRTN activities is determined wholly by themselves and the quarterly work Rota is drawn up accordingly. Most of our various tasks require about two hours, although it is always as well to be prepared for up to three hours, for those occasions when things don’t quite work out as expected.

In addition to the regular weekly task of producing the local news digest Talking Newspaper, there is, of course also the monthly Talking Magazine. This requires 90-minutes’ worth of contributions each month and here we draw on individual volunteers’ experience to help in numerous ways. These may include the reading of articles from outside sources, interviewing interesting people, or even contributing reminiscences or stories of their own, presented by themselves or others. This side of the EaRTN can provide many interesting opportunities on a rather less strenuous time scale than the weekly TN.
