Prior’s House

The Prior’s House. Whilst in theory all monks lived communally, the prior was too important a bloke to take such things too literally – he needed somewhere to entertain important guests, for a start. By all accounts Castle Acre Priory wasn’t a spectacularly religious religious house; there are even stories of it and a rival institution recruiting private armies and having a bit of a skirmish. The tents seen here are part of an archery demonstration; the site has also been used to put on amusingly camp Tudor mummers’ plays.

A couple of shots of the castle, founded in the late eleventh century by one of William the Conqueror’s supporters. It continued to be occupied by the same family until the late middle ages; heavily fortified in the twelfth century, it had fallen into disrepair by the 15th.
