214 (TANKER) SQUADRON
Towards the end of 1976 the MK1 Victor tankers came to the end of their useful lives and were gradually withdrawn from service.  Some went to aviation museums but most were scrapped.  My own aircraft XA939 went to RAF Catterick to be scrapped although the cockpit was retained for a time and used for fire drill training. It was sad to see them being destroyed after all the years of service they had given. XA 937 was one of the last aircraft to be scrapped on the squadron and the photographs below show the preparations for it's final sortie.

In 1977 no one could have predicted the Falklands war which occurred 5 years later. Operation "Black Buck" saw the Victor K2 tanker fleet support the lone Vulcan on it's way to bomb the runway at Port Stanley. Tanking techniques devised during the years the Victor Mk K1 tankers were in service, were the keystone to the success of the mission. Many ex 214 squadron aircrew were involved, including Squadron Leader Bob Tuxford.  Bob was the captain of the last Victor to refuel the lone Vulcan before it's bombing run on the Port Stanley runway. To experience what it was like to take part in tanking operations, I can fully recommend Rowland White's remarkable book "Vulcan 607".  It is probably the most accurate description of a Victor tanking operation (in anger), that will ever be written!
