RAF WATTISHAM

The following photographs feature two Messerschmitt ME 108's. They were resprayed to represent ME 109's and appeared in the films "633 Squadron" and  "The Longest Day".  Ex Flight Lieutenant John (Jeff) Hawke shown in the photographs, along with Taffy Rich, flew the two aircraft to the USA after the filming was completed. John had a somewhat chequered career after leaving the RAF. He was involved in making various television documentaries and in particular starred in the  documentary "Mitchells fly IMC".  He also helped with the making of the film "The Battle of Britain" by flying one of the aircraft used for filming the air combat scenes.  He was involved in various other exploits until his unfortunate death in an aircraft accident in 1992.
