Pickering Rally 2010

The first rally of the year was great, a lovely site in a lovely part of the country and lovely weather too. What more could you ask for? Everyone received a warm welcome from Joyce and Norman and their helpers, Margaret and Alan Shankster.  As the weather was so kind to us, the choices of places to visit were many and apart from Scarborough, and the usual trips on the North Yorkshire Moors railway to Goathland and Whitby, some of us were able to enjoy Rievaulx Abbey – stunning in the sunshine and Helmsley Castle. Thorton-le Dale was  another firm favourite, as was an outing to either Forge Valley or Bempton Cliffs, where for once, you were not blown sideways! The weather also appeared good enough for a BBQ  and Alan Shankster was kind enough to let others cook their food on it. I do have to add, though, that some dark clouds did roll in during the cooking which hastened the process no end. Luckily, there was no rain and we were able to enjoy the fruits of the men's labours.

On the Saturday evening, most of us went to the village hall where we enjoyed one of Norman's beetle drives with fish and chip supper. Shame to say that Norman had to show us how to draw a beetle! ( We could hear Joyce using her teacher's voice, telling us we could all do better.......) It was a fun night and thank goodness the neighbours' couldn't hear the loud laughter as we'd never be able to return to the village again.

The end of the rally was marked by us all going to the Providence Inn – a local pub where Joyce and Norman had arranged a very enjoyable meal. A splendid ending to a very enjoyable stay in Yorkshire.

Pickering Rally Footnote......................

The rally at Pickering proved to be the final one arranged for us by Joyce and Norman. Over the years, they have organised many rallies and whether you arrive for a few days or the full rally, they would always give you the same very warm welcome. The enduring theme for Joyce and Norman has always been “ Here you are, set up, then relax and enjoy yourself. Just do whatever you want.”

We shall miss going on their rallies – usually in and around their beloved Yorkshire and those who have been to Pickering will also miss their legendary “beetle” drive/ fish and chip evenings that have become an essential part of that rally and enjoyed by many of us.

Joyce and Norman's attitude to caravaning is what our club is all about – enjoyment and friendship. On a personal note, we now have great memories of our trips “up North” and certainly, if  Joyce and Norman had not organised the rallies, we would not have seen such a beautiful part of the country.

We wish them continued enjoyment with their Carousel and we want to say thank you for everything they've contributed to our very special club. Most of all, we look forward to seeing them at other rallies where they can just sit back and enjoy themselves – just by being there!
