Woodthorpe Rally 2010

Early in the year, Anne And I were looking through the list of rallies for 2010,we were attracted to Keith and Sylvia's September rally in Lincolnshire not far from Skegness. The reason this appealed to us was that we met at Butlins holiday camp in 'Skeggy' just a few days over 50 years ago in August 1960 and we have never been back. Anne was in her second season working at the camp, she was a cashier not a redcoat, I was with a group of male friends on holiday from London.

I mentioned this to Keith on my rally form not thinking that he and Sylvia would arrange almost our Golden Wedding party, just 18 months early, Lorna made a wonderful cake which was handed round at least 3 evenings, and wine was poured for all present, we would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone at the rally for such a lovely evening.

Woodthorpe Hall has an excellent site, with some of the best facilities we have come across, we had the use of a room in the clubhouse most evenings, the staff served us all fish & chips one night, and a good farewell dinner was served in the restaurant on Monday evening, the drinks in the bar were a reasonable price, and all of this only 5 minutes walk from the rally pitches.

26 members enjoyed the rally, the weather was fairly kind to us, although we did have a few showers, Anne and I stayed for an extra day and we were glad we remembered the sun cream!, I had phoned Butlins and arranged a visit, they let us in free, day trippers usually pay 7.50 each. The camp occupies the same site but has been completely rebuilt just as we expected, the accommodation looked very up to date, there was just one chalet from the 1930's retained as a memorial. The camp (I am not sure if they call it a camp any more) was very busy, we were told that they had special deals in September, the most popular attraction was the very large indoor swimming pool, we could see that this would appeal to young families, but we decided that our Gobur suits us better.

We had a memorable trip for several reasons, we spent 2 nights at the C.& C club site at Sandringham in order to see the Tour Of Britain cycle race, the riders flashed by in about 2 minutes, as we are both cyclists we enjoyed the experience, we also got a puncture in the car, a large sharp flint ruined a perfectly good tyre, the spare tyre saw us through to Skegness where the tyre was replaced in 20 minutes. Thanks to Keith & Sylvia and Ron & Maureen for the rally, and for giving us the chance to walk down memory lane after 50 years.
