Bourton-on-the-Water Rally 2013

Cotswolds GOC rally 18-25 April, Field Barn Park, Bourton on the Water. We arrived at Malcolm and Kate’s rally at Field Park Barn on a rather breezy but dry spring afternoon. The site was a good one, attractively laid out with plenty of trees, generous pitches and an area of reeds in the centre of the square shape. A total of 21 Carousels by the weekend, occupied a quarter of the site which was approached by a longish track from the road over a hill from which we were hidden, giving an “away from it all” atmosphere.

Our welcome packs contained an interesting quiz sheet plus raffle ticket. After the Thursday evening welcome meeting we were able to enjoy the many walks and interesting places to visit from the site. The mainly sunny weather made the local honey coloured Cotswold stone houses look even more attractive.

Quite a few of us visited Cotswold Farm Park famous for Adam Henson's rare breeds (frequently featured on BBC TV’s Countryfile). His famous bull “Eric” has to be seen to be believed-he is MASSIVE! Snowshill and Sherbourne were also on the “must see” list.

If, like me, you went for shower late and after dark Sonne et Lumiere took on a whole new meaning! After a while, mid ablution, the light sensor no longer realised you were there, plunging the whole place in complete darkness!! (The site was a green one with no outside lighting) A frantic arm and towel flapping session OUTSIDE the shower cubicle was needed to restore the light BUT only for a while- needing a repeat flapping performance to complete your shower. Certainly the most amusing showers I have encountered.

During the week, coffee meets were either mornings or evenings to suit and this worked well as everyone could make the most of the beautiful Cotswolds. Mary’s famous raffle raised almost £80 for Richard and Stephen's chosen charities. After such a long cold winter the countryside was still fairy dormant but as we enjoyed a week of warm sunshine, the fields and hedges round the site were greening up rapidly and each day there was more visible growth.

The quiz and raffle prizes winners were announced on the Sunday coffee meet to allow for members who were unable to stay on into the week. The last evening of the rally saw us at the Lamb Inn at nearby Great Rissington for a delicious meal with good service. All too quickly the week was over so we all packed up, folded down, hitched up and disappeared on our way home to various parts of the UK taking with us wonderful memories of a great rally.

Thank you to Malcolm and Kate for making it such a success.
