Rosedale Rally 2013

Of the 15 vans at Rosedale Abbey, 11 came on from the Bedale rally.  We were welcomed by Margaret and Alan Shankster and Margaret and David Bray, and were able to set up before the rain came.  Rain and cold featured quite a lot over the week, but the views of the moors and dales in this part of Yorkshire were spectacular.  Driving across the moors, though, we were confronted by so many pheasants that seemed to have a kamikaze tendency!

The site was a short walk from the pretty village with its church, shop and post office, and apart from no mobile phone signal or TV, and poor radio reception, the site was good.  In particular, the underfloor heating in the toilet block was most welcome!  There were some lovely walks from the site, but the 1 in 3 gradient and hairpin bends of Chimney Bank were quite challenging for walkers and motorists.

We were around 10 miles from Pickering, renowned for the North York Moors Railway, and on our visit there the steam locomotive `Sir Nigel Gresley` was standing in the station.  We also visited National Trust properties of Rievaulx Terrace and Nunnington Hall, the delightful town of Helmsley, and Scarborough.

On Saturday, our hosts arranged a skittles evening at the `Reading Room` up the valley.  Alan had built two skittle alleys out of a large cardboard carton, and the skittles were drinks bottles filled with water.  They worked a treat, and the competition between the ladies and the men gave us a lot of fun.  Between sessions the lady hostesses provided pork pies or cheese pasties with mushy peas, followed by a selection of fruit pies and chocolate cake with cream. A very successful evening!

A quiz about wild flowers kept us occupied somewhat, but nobody identified all 30 questions.  However, three of us tied for first place - and received a prize.

The meal on the last night was excellent and huge (it seems they breed them hungry in Yorkshire!).  That brought to an end a very good rally, in spite of the weather, and we thank Alan and David and the two Margarets very much for all that they put into it.
