Thorpe Hall Rally 2015

Thorpe Hall Caravan and Camping site was an excellent venue for our GOC rally, set within a walled garden in the east riding of Yorkshire just outside the village of Rudston. The site is attractively laid out with pretty flower beds, fish pond and patio next to the wooden reception and shop building.

We arrived on a Wednesday, a lovely sunny day, to be greeted and welcomed with a “cuppa” by Helen and Maurice Clare ably assisted by Karen and Tom Pasley. The attractive site was soon graced by the presence of 17 carousels housing 33 members plus Tess, Brodie, Meg and Molly (honorary 4 legged, waggy tail members!)

Our welcome pack contained lots of useful information plus a quiz. Clearly we were having our brains put to work by the 22 general knowledge questions plus 15 caricatures of well-known faces to name!

The pitches were spacious and each had a TV connection on the bollard. Some of the TV connections did require specialist tools and engineering knowledge, pliers and insulating tape, to achieve a signal!! The shower block was spotless, heated, and the showers had an adjustable water temperature which worked well.

Thorpe Hall almost had a sea view! as it was only about 4 miles from the coast.

Friday saw the usual influx of “kenders” (weekenders) and one unit in particular was a head turner. If anyone in a 10/2 slimline thought there was not room to swing a cat, the “Go Pod” is almost too small to swing a kitten!! We had never seen such a tiny caravan! With its pop top roof and a canopy over the open back wall/door the couple in side could just stand up!

On Saturday morning we were invited to join a cowslip and orchid walk around the private gardens of Thorpe Hall led by the owner Somerled (his name comes from Skye) and his little son William. A prize was offered for the person who named the most species of flora & fauna. Delicious tubs of local ice cream “Mr Moos “was enjoyed by the 2 joint winners.

The area had lots of interesting places to visit and some beautiful coast path scenery and walks, but one of the best has to be Bempton Cliffs RSPB reserve with the country’s largest colony of breeding gannets, puffins, guillemots, kittiwakes and razorbills. The cliffs are home to 250,000 birds and the sight and smell (not unpleasant) is awe-inspiring and unforgettable. Gannets on their nests are only a fierce stabbing peck away from the next door neighbour. Puffins are such gorgeous pretty birds and fly with their little legs splayed out resembling bicycle stabilisers!! They beat their wings 400 times a minute to fly- try doing that with your arms! We did and couldn’t !!!

Watching the circling huge flocks of kittiwakes overhead and listening to the calls is mesmeric, like snowflakes in the wind. A bird watchers and photographers paradise indeed (and free!)

Saturday evening saw us all assembling in the village hall for supper (bring your own first course) sitting in groups of about 4 with the tables bright with everyone’s different sets of matching crockery and the odd bottle of “lemonade” of course. Delicious puddings were provided by the rally. Between courses we had a skittles tournament and name the faces quiz, causing great hilarity.

The raffle during the rally raised £72.20 (where did that odd 20 pence come from?) for Richard and Stephen’s chosen charities. It was drawn on Monday evening as several members were leaving on Tuesday.

Tuesday’s coffee meet had an end of term feeling as farewells were said, especially to the early leavers.

A huge thank you to Helen, Maurice, Karen and Tom for all their hard work in running a super rally.

PS. A safety reminder to all Carousellers – PLEASE uncoil your hook up cable when it is in use. Failure to do so can result in a fire or damage to the bollard connection due to overheating.
