Doddington Rally 2015

On a warm and sunny but windy day 18 of us plus 2 canines in 10 Carousels were pitched in “The Paddock” area of Fields End Water Caravan Park, Doddington Cambridgeshire.

A lovely peaceful adult only site with 2 fishing lakes and a good sized wooded area, complete with cherry, apple and hazelnut trees.  The cherries were deliciously ripe!

Pitching the meeting tent was a challenge in the wind. We were in danger of being launched into orbit by the wind tugging hard at the nylon fabric in spite of all of us hanging on for dear life!   Eventually it was safely pegged down. We were only allowed to have it up for five nights as apparently the site owner is rather particular about his grass.  It looked great decorated with the strings of solar fairy lights.

Most evenings we gathered inside to socialise over a self-supplied coffee or “lemonade”!

The Fens is a large very flat area of hedgeless crop fields crisscrossed with waterways and open roads and very big skies. The road look level, but driving along the B roads and smaller, is akin to riding a bucking bronco!! The road signs are very helpful – one next to a river said “Think don’t sink” Good advice indeed.

One welcome surprise to us all was that parking in the fens is free - yes even in the towns!

Ely cathedral is a must to see, and marvel at the sheer size and grandeur, and wonder how it was built without today’s modern machines and cranes.

One night strange noises were coming form an awning and the owners were a bit disconcerted as to the source?   Investigation revealed a rather nosey hedgehog investigating the awning contents.   He (or was it she?) did what hedgehogs do and curled into a ball so was unceremoniously rolled outside!

The area is good for bird watchers and Welney wetlands centre is nearby also the RSPB reserve at Welches Dam.

The coast along the Wash (abroad as it is over the county border!) is a good walking area and the tide goes out for “miles” exposing mud flats for the wading sea birds.

On Monday a huge Sabre 5th wheeler arrived - massive at 36 feet long - dwarfing our Carousels.  It had 5 extending side sections and even the tow vehicle had matching graphics!

A real head turner and certainly the biggest one I have ever seen.  We would not fancy towing it along any narrow roads.

We had about 50/50 sunny and dull /rainy days but luckily it was dry on Tuesday for packing up

A big thank you to Keith and Wendy for inviting us to join them for the week, which we all enjoyed.
