Briarfields Rally 2016

Kate and Malcolm started the 2016 rally season with a great rally to Briarfields Touring Park between Cheltenham and Gloucester. 16 vans were booked to attend unfortunately Margaret and Jim Newman and Norman and Joyce Taylor were not able to come. Both Jim and Norman were not well. We wish them both a speedy recovery.

There was a variety of weather while on the site. The arrival day started fine and dry but in the afternoon there were rain showers and thunder. This turned into a very heavy rain storm during Malcolm's welcome to us all at the coffee evening. 4 people were attending their first rally with us. Alan and Sylvia Eccles and Alan and Sandra Howells were warmly welcomed at the coffee evening on the first night.

A bus service with stops just outside the site runs between Gloucester and Cheltenham every 10 minutes so most people took advantage of this. Trips on the Gloucestershire and Warwickshire Railway, visits to National Trust Houses and gardens, a visit to the Jet Age museum, Tewkesbury and Chedworth Roman Villa were also undertaken.

There was very heavy rain in the early hours of Saturday morning. About 7.00am it all went very quiet but on looking out we discovered that it was snowing. Luckily the snow did not last long but it remained on the hill tops until about midday.

Sunday morning was a white frost and beautiful blue skies with a sunny day to follow. After that the weather settled down and we had some lovely warm days to sit outside.

Saturday evening Kate and Malcolm did a ‘Pudding Evening’ which was delicious. The raffle which raised nearly £60.00 was drawn on Sunday morning as some people had to leave early. The quiz based on titles of films kept us all occupied. It was won by Alan and Sandra who did very well and got only about one incorrect answer.

Monday evening saw us at the Harvester which was within walking distance of the site.

By the last evening there were only 9 vans left. Malcolm and Kate had booked a room at the Pavilion a church centre very near the ASDA superstore for a beetle drive. Most of us had to be reminded of the rules. 4 people to a table, when a beetle was completed everyone totalled up their scores. The highest scoring person on the table moved clockwise while the lowest moved anticlockwise to new tables. The beetles drawn were very artistic. Everyone had brought food for a share supper so partway through we all stopped for this. It was Ben Strawson’s birthday and Eve had supplied a birthday cake complete with a candle.

After we had sung happy birthday and Ben had blown out the candle we all helped him to eat the cake.

At the end of the evening all the scores were totalled up. Maurice Clare was was the winner.

Thank you Malcolm and Kate for a really good rally.
