Ellesmere Rally 2016

Rally report - Newnes Caravan Park Ellesmere, Shropshire 21st -26th April 2016

A gloriously sunny day welcomed 12 carousels to Ellesmere in Shropshire. We were pitched in the main field commanding beautiful views across the hills. Phil and Clare helped by Tricia and Andrew greeted us all, and soon 23 GOC members plus Ben and Ossie soon pitched up and settled in.

That day was also notable for being our Queens’ 90th birthday and a couple of the caravans had Union Jack flags and celebratory banner to mark this momentous occasion.

Our welcome packs included useful tourist information, and three quizzes!

The area had numerous places to visit including Ironbridge, Pontcysllte Aqueduct, Hawkstone Park, Colemere, Hack Green Nuclear Bunker and Llangollen canal plus much more.

The local walk on Friday was beautiful, but a tad longer than scheduled, due to the irresistible lure of an ice cream on a hot day!

Shropshire Wildlife Trust had a nature walk on Sunday lead by “Alan” and several of us joined this starting from Trefonen. Alan was very knowledgeable regarding the area and its wildlife pointing out things of interest to the 2 dozen or so walkers. At one point we were all negotiating one of the many stiles when we became surrounded by a very frisky herd of bullocks blocking the last few yards to the stile. They had probably been attracted by the 3 dogs on the walk. It took a challenge from the smallest lady in the group to get them away from the stile to get us safely over it!

One of the quizzes was to illustrate a given coastal town and display the “Picasso” efforts in our caravan window, then identify the town and score the drawing for artistic effort. We must have looked like some sort of inspector going round each caravan with a clipboard?

The other quizzes were anagrams of local landmarks and cryptic clues for common names of trees. An “ology” was definitely required here!

Monday morning’s coffee meet saw the raffle being drawn which raised almost £50 for Richard and Stephen’s charities. Next the all-important eagerly awaited quiz answers. These were accompanied by oohs and aahs as all was revealed.

Phil and Clare won the landmarks, Steve and Yvonne the trees and John and Maureen the coastal towns.

On Monday evening a meal was enjoyed by all in the Red Lion in Ellesmere.

Tuesday arrive all too soon after a rally with lots of sun and luckily little rain and a flurry of activity of packing started. Two caravans stayed on after the rally to explore the area further. They looked somewhat lonely in an almost empty field.

It just remains to say a huge thank you to Phil and Clare plus Tricia and Andrew for all the work in organising a great rally.
