Hertford Rally 2018

The weather was fine and sunny as the nine vans attending were pitched and awnings erected. Several people helped Keith and Wendy to put up the meeting tent where at 7.30pm armed with chairs and coffee, tea or wine etc we gathered for a chat each evening.

The site wardens had at first said that an extra pitch would have to be allocated and paid for if a meeting tent was used, but in the end they suggested a donation to their flower fund. Before the tent could be pitched the warden came to make certain that it would be alright to put the tent where we wanted. The reason for the strict observance of the rules was clear later in the week when 2 people in the company of the site warden appeared to be carrying out a site inspection.

Carol West joined us one evening as she lives quite close to the site.

The rest of the week was mainly sunny and warm although quite breezy, with just a small rain shower one early morning. The site had an abundance of wild life including rabbits, squirrels, ducks from the pond on site and a pheasant. The squirrels managed to get into an awning and helped themselves to fruit that had been left there.

People used the week to visit friends, chill out or do some sight seeing. Several places were visited during the week including the Kelvedon Hatch Nuclear Bunker about 22 miles away. Another favourite was the very large Van Hage garden centre which had a good coffee shop.

There was a footpath to Hertford starting not far from the site which was well used by us. The site warden informed us that the Wetherspoon Pub “The 6 Templars” near to the Castle in Hertford would give a 20% discount on food if Camping and Caravanning Club membership cards were shown.

Maz Harper had to leave early as she had other commitments but everyone else stayed for the full 7 days.

The meeting tent was well used each evening as we gathered to chat, tell of where we had been and our plans for the next day.

The day before we left we gathered together in the morning for a coffee followed by a group photo taken by Mick Bigmore who came armed with a tripod so we could all be in the photo. The taking of this photo caused much hilarity.

After the photo shoot we helped to take down the meeting tent and pack it away.

All too soon it was time to pack up and return home.

Many thanks to Wendy and Keith for suggesting and organising the venue and inviting us all to join them at Hertford.
