 Much Wenlock Rally 2018

All the “W’s” spring to mind-a Warm Welcome on a Wall to Wall sunshine day on a Wonderfully attractive site in Much Wenlock!

Sytche Caravan and Camping in Much Wenlock was the venue for the rally, run by Steve and Yvonne, ably assisted by Ron and Ros. The site is up a quiet lane with views of the Shropshire hills and well maintained by the wardens June and Adrian. Fourteen Carousels housing 26 GOC members (plus Tom) were pitched up. Some pitches were more sloping than others making getting level a challenge for some.

Soon everyone was settled and awnings erected refreshed by teas and coffees from “HQ”

On the first evening we all managed to sit down at assorted tables in the tent to enjoy a meal cooked by Steve –delicious.

The weather was unusually warm for April; Steve even had to go to Tesco for shorts!!

The area is famous for Ironbridge which alas, is literally wrapped up for serious renovation work. Nevertheless there are observation portholes to see the work in progress. The museums and exhibits are well worth visiting to admire the work of the Industrial Revolution and history of the town and surrounding area. The Ironbridge passport is very good value effectively giving a 50% reduction on the entry cost of the museums.

There are several historic towns nearby including Shrewsbury, Telford and Bridgenorth. The Severn Valley Steam railway is another “must visit” attraction.

The site has some good walks directly from it, including a footpath through woods to Much Wenlock. A really scenic walk is along Wenlock Edge, through pretty woods with spring flowers among the freshly greening trees.

The town has some beautiful timbered buildings and a lovely town centre complete with clock tower and museum/tourist information. In the Guildhall street level area is a daily market selling fruit and vegetables.

Saturday evening was a social including a beetle drive, in the tent. Soon we were all seated at tables of 3 or 4 and the fervent rattling of dice in lidless spice jars was punctuated by oohs and aahs as everyone desperately hoped for a six to draw the body to start! Once “beetle” had been called, scores were added up and losers moved tables anticlockwise and winners clockwise. Half time was a pause for coffee and a selection of “naughty but nice” cakes.

Helena was the winner and Alan (Eccles) got the booby prize.

In case anyone though they were on holiday for any easy time, there was the quiz to complete! Questions, 47 of them, to which the answers were general knowledge or place names.

Monday evening’s coffee meet was also the raffle draw and quiz prize giving. The raffle raised just over £60. The quiz answers were announced with suitable comments of “of course” etc as they were read out. The brainy winners were Alan and Margaret.

The tradition of going out for a meal on the last evening was to the Gaskell Arms in Much Wenlock and much enjoyed by all.

Luckily for us that Wednesday dawned bright and sunny with passing showers. Quite a contrast to the previous day, when it rained all day from mid-morning. Packing up was soon underway with pauses to say cheerio as members left for home.

A big thank you to Steve &Yvonne and Ron & Ros for running such an enjoyable GOC rally.
