Barnstones Rally

Barnstones, great Bourton, Oxfordshire

Thursday 10th July to Tuesday 15th July

Organised by Malcolm and Kate Smith

This Rally was the first visit to Barnstones at Great Bourton. Our Chairman, Malcolm, sussed it out last October and I suspect, bearing in mind the floods last year, chose this site to look at because it is on high ground! The owner Mr D Boddington, a real country gentleman, had set aside for our sole use a rally field for a very reasonable cost and had also been instrumental in arranging the hire of the Village Hall also for a modest fee.

Kate and Malcolm Smith had the very willing assistance of Diane and Graham Lester at what transpired to be a very successful Rally. 22 units were present, 3 of the units had single occupants, including Misty an elderly, affectionate, blind and deaf dog who with his master Gordon must count as one occupant as they seem to be inseparable, the 3 units underlining the fact that Gobur Club members all belong to one large family group. In addition, Julie Putman created a great deal of interest when she stayed on the site with her Suzuki WagonR conversion. A very clever piece of engineering design. I think I speak for all of us when I wish her well with her ‘solo car camping’. Mary’s Raffle raised on this occasion just over £40.

The weather was mixed, but generally we fared quite well and most of us were able to dodge the sometimes heavy showers and enjoy the many good walks to be had in warm Sunshine, especially the footpaths and towpaths on the Oxford Canal. The walk to Cropredy via the Canal path was pleasant, gentle and led one directly to the village shop where Ice-cream could be had prior to going back to Great Bourton over the fields.

Saturday evening saw a ‘Banbury Cross Drive’; Beetle Drives have given way to whatever local emblem can be borrowed for the night. The superb Fish and Chip supper was collected and delivered by, would you believe, the site owner Mr Boddington.

The Monday evening meal at the Red Lion in Cropredy was a delight. How they managed to fit us all in, I do not know. I swear I heard cries of ecstasy from the ladies present, perhaps not at the male waiters, but at the Tiramasu served for the sweet course. The Red Lion was a very good choice for our meal.

If I have missed out anything of consequence, but not me singing Happy Birthday to me, my apologies. Maureen and I felt quite sad that this was to be our last Rally with the Gobur Owners Club. But we are not saying goodbye, just Au Revoir. We hope to see most of you again somewhere.

Our sincere thanks to the Organisers, and their helpers, of the Rallies and of course the participants without whom we could not have enjoyed so much fun and friendship.
