Tyre Guidance

Prevention of theft of the spare wheel.

Tyre Guidance
Tyre pressure is very important and should be checked regularly. The pressures for your Carousel are in your handbook that came with the van. There is not a ‘one size fits all’ tyre pressure. The pressure depends on Carousel model, year of manufacture and actual tyres fitted.

The recommendation is that tyres are replaced after 5 years, whether or not they are worn.

When a blowout occurs, a Carousel is very, very unlikely to turn over, but severe damage can occur to the wheel arch and adjacent flooring. If Tyron bands are fitted, I have been told that because the tyre cannot come off the wheel hub, the damage is non-existent or very little when a blowout occurs.

Tyre blowout 10-2T (500x356-72)

This (8 year old) tyre was fitted to a Carousel 10/2T. It suffered a blowout whilst travelling at 60 MPH. Fortunately the damage to the caravan was very slight.

This is a very unusual occurrence and the normal culprit is the owners’ poor maintenance.

Poole and Portsmouth to Cherbourg crossing.
The ferry from/to Poole to Cherbourg: Gobur ‘trailers’ CAN use the fast ferry providing that the overall length of car and caravan is less than 13 metres.
The ferry from/to Portsmouth to Cherbourg: Gobur ‘trailers’ CANNOT use the fast ferry because it is a smaller ferry.
Both of these ferries are not roll on/roll off and hence you will have to turn around on board. If you know any different please let the webmaster know.

Prevention of theft of the spare wheel.
A member writes; soon after purchasing my Carousel caravan, I parked it on a slope which, with hindsight, exposed the spare wheel for any one to see. So one bright spark did and took it. As a temporary measure I have threaded a wire through some of the holes in the handle to the carrier of the wheel and twisted the ends together so that it now requires a pair of wire cutters to undo. Clearly, the location is such that a padlock will get covered by spray from the wheel which lies just in front. It has been suggested that to keep the padlock clean, just cover with a plastic bag and secure with a elastic band.
