Abbey Farm Caravan & Camp Site, Muchelney

Thursday 19th July to Tuesday 24th July

Organised by Anne & Ted Grummitt

We met the site owners Sandy & Brian Peggram at a Camping and Caravanning club rally in France last year, they had the largest unit( an American motorhome ) and we were in our Carousel which was the smallest. On the side of their van was an advert for their site at Muchelney, in a moment of madness, and after several drinks, I said it sounds just right for a G.O.C. rally.

Last September we spent a few days there to check it out, and we were pleased with what we found, Angela & Derek Ward paid us a visit and confirmed our impressions.

We had 12 vans at our rally, 2 others dropped out at the last minute due to unavoidable circumstances Despite there being rather a lot of rain just up the M5 around Gloucester and Tewksbury, our site remained relatively dry despite the odd shower.

The site barn was ideal for our social gatherings, the site owners had used it for their granddaughters wedding reception just a few weeks earlier and they put themselves out to make us welcome, Sandy made us a plum pie with plums picked on site, for our American supper, Brian provided a BBQ made from an old oil drum, he also supplied the charcoal,(we replaced it before we left) he also gave us about 20 sausages, the communal BBQ was a winner, mass cooking and warmth on a cool evening.

We gave our rally goers a couple of easy quizzes!, the first was musical, we even provided the answers, they just needed matching up, Vic and Denise Harris got all 50 questions correct,( Vic said Denise did them all), the second quiz was all about GOBUR, we had some amusing answers, Len & Pat Parsons won with 3 out of 10 !! I did not need my tie breaker question which was, When did the last train leave Melton Constable?--4th. April 1964, please memorise all of you quiz buffs!

This was our first rally and we think most members enjoyed it, we certainly enjoyed the experience, many thanks to our assistants Enid & Keith Simpson, their water heater and large kettle were invaluable at the coffee mornings!
