Di and Graham Lester, ably assisted by Kate & Malcolm Smith, organised our third rally abroad but the first in France. 17 units eventually all arrived on the first evening by various routes some having been in France for some time. The site was excellent blessed with very good washrooms, delightful pitches, a bar with refreshments, fresh baguettes and croissants each morning for breakfast, fresh fried frites for supper, and a lake overflowing with fish for the fishermen. The swimming pool was fine, I was told, once you were used to the temperature !
The site was in a very interesting location being not far from many of the1944 Normandy landing beaches, a number of always impressive war graves, museums of the more famous sections of the international armies, Bayeux and it’s tapestry. Mont St Michele and Brittany were not too far away.
Our get together meal held on Saturday, as France just about closes down on a Monday, was first class. The traditional Monday meal being replaced by a Cheese and Wine evening. There cannot be a better place to do Cheese and Wine than France, especially in the open air on a balmy evening.
The length of time people stayed varied a lot from the minimum of 5 nights to over three weeks, and the routes to the site also varied enormously. Poole to Cherbourg gave the shortest drive to the site, Dover to Calais the shortest sea crossing, and no sea at all under the tunnel. Thank goodness. Lorna Veitch pretended to be Mary and ran the traditional raffle. Thanks Lorna.
Huge thanks therefore to the organisers. A question for Di and Graham – when will the next one be ? David Morgan
