BSA Bantam vertical clutch pull

This modification was primarily carried out on trials machines. The standard
clutch operating helix is adjacent to the gearbox sprocket and quickly becomes
blocked with mud and grass, which wraps around the mechanism preventing proper
operation of the clutch.
Moving the operating lever inside the engine outer cover protects die helix from
the mud and debris and allows more clearance for it to pass around the gearbox
sprocket area due to the greater clearance obtained by relocation. The inner
cover is machined to accept a cable stop, which is attached to die cover by
stainless steel screws. The standard cable can be used with this arrangement as
is shown in the photograph. If nylon lined cables are used and the give a much
better feel to the controls the cable stop can be made to accommodate an
adjuster and the lever end adapted to use a smaller nipple eliminating the for
the side cable slot.
The cable run is arguably better than the original and makes replacement of the
cable a simpler and much cleaner task than with the standard lower cable
arrangement. This feature alone is of use to both road and off-road rider alike.
