A local walk above our village. This was one of those rare (for West Wales) winter days of brilliant sunshine. Most of the previous week's snow had melted, and the warm sun promised spring.
Path above Cwm Clettwr, 2006.
Pastel. 29 x 20 cm.
The light effects attracted me to this view. On a dull, damp winter day the sun suddenly broke through the clouds to light up the top of the mountain ridge. This picture continues an experiment with painting on an almost black background.
Cadair Idris, 2006.

A sunny summer walk in our beautiful Rheidol Valley. A simple reminder of a happy day outdoors.

River Rheidol, 2005.
Pastel. 19 x 26 cm.
A very cold day in February with ice edging a small brook high up in the hills. The sunlight glittering on the ripples and the reflections on the stones made such interesting shapes that a picture was a must.
Light on the brook, Cwmerfyn, 2006.
Pastel. 22 x 22 cm.
A small picture worked en plein air during a course at St David's, Pembrokeshire. My first experimental painting on very dark underpainting. I remember a beautiful warm day in early August feeling relaxed and happy.
Tree in sunshine, 2004.
Acrylic. 29 x 24 cm.
Another of our regular walks around and through the sand dunes at Ynyslas. On this summer day the colours of sky, sea, and sand seemed extra bright.
Dyfi Estuary, Ynyslas, 2006.
Pastel. 26 x 19 cm.
We pass this large pond almost every day on one of our regular dog walks. In summer the water lillies remind me of Monet at Giverney. I couldn't resist having a go at my own version.

Aberglasney, near Carmarthen, is a rescued house and garden being imaginatively restored. One part of the grounds contains a peaceful woodland walk. The way the sunlight broke through the canopy across the distant path made me want to record the moment.

We live near Ynyslas, an area of beach and sand dunes at the mouth of the Dyfi Estuary. The weather usually comes in from the west, without interruption; the sky can be as breathtakingly beautiful as the sea and the land. I hope that this series communicates something of the beauty and our joy in being outdoors sharing the scene. I really enjoyed painting these small canvases.
