Email List Forum Archive

A website is now in operation which allows you to retrieve past messages from the Europa Club List Forum and to search for the topics of interest among the 12000+ messages. It has been constructed and will be maintained by Andrew Sarangan. Andrew's message introducing it is here.

The archive is at Forum Archive It archives both postings on the current Europa-List and on the previous list hosted by Avnet. It is additional to the archive provided by the Europa-List, which now also contains all postings from the start of the Forum in 1996.

ASI Calibration

A document from John Anselmi describing a water manometer used to calibrate an ASI and to check for leaks in pitot and static lines. To quote John - "This is a Word97 .doc copy of the ASI calibration instructions from my old glider inspection manual.  One point though - I have left the water manometer figures as published, but have a suspicion that the 105mm point should be 106mm.  Plotting the points as a curve suggests this, but I have not yet tried a knots squared vs water height plot to see if it is a straight line." The document is here . You can either left-click on this link and let the word processor open within your browser window, or right-click on the link and save a local copy of the file on your PC for perusal later. The file size is 199KB. The thread concerning this started on about 15 Jan 03.

Fuel Tank Problem

A picture from John Lawton of a hole in his fuel tank. To quote - "This is a picture of the hole I found so you can show others what to look for. It appears that it is definitely a manufacturing flaw and seems to have been melted from the inside, given that the hole's edges are smooth. In the 1980's my brother and I ran the largest Ultralight (Microlight) dealership/training facilities in the Southeast U.S.. We built around 500 for customers over the years and I've seen this sort of flaw before in fuel tanks.". The picture is here . Another picture, taken from the inner side of the tank wall is here .

[I have never heard of this before and I assume that it is unusual, though not unknown, judging by what John says. Clearly it is a good idea to have a look at your tank when delivered, before putting it away. In this case, the factory response was immediate and positive and John received a replacement tank within 3 days. - Ed]

A graph from Ferg Kyle plotting tank capacity against fuel depth.

ATC Procedures in French

A document from Peter Mileham ( jacqui@idsl.freeserve.co.uk ) giving French radio phraseology for common situations, intended for visiting English-speaking pilots. This is a Word97 document, 39KB, and is available here. [Right-click to download it.]

An offer from Tim Ward on the supply of control column boots, including a diagram and a photo, and of prop-tip covers and feul filler pipes.

Circuit Breakers

An article passed on by Ferg Kyle. It discusses circuit breakers and their use and aircraft wiring, mainly in the context of heavy metal. It was written by Mike Murphy of the Air Transport Safety Group, Transport Canada. Download at Circuit Breakers (Word97 format, 67Kb) Also available at www.cadmus.ca which carries a selection of feedback to the article and links to documents on aircraft wiring materials.

Europa Now in Squadron Service

A nice picture has been sent in by Hal Perkins. It shows G-KITS at RAF Cranwell (which is the home of RAF flight training). The jets are BAE Hawks, members of the Red Arrows display team. (The picture is 640x480 pixels, 27Kb).

An AutoCAD file has been posted by Rob Housman, in response to a query about fuselage profile in relation to building a dolly. Rob's accompanying comment was "The attached AutoCAD file came from Chris Beck.  The dwg. is not dimensioned but I did verify that it is to scale and can be dimensioned within AutoCAD." The file size is 157Kb. The file is at FuselageCAD (replacement version from Miles McCallum). A PDF version (also from Miles) is also available at FuselagePDF.

Dave Bosomworth has contributed new versions of his spreadsheets for the purpose of calibrating the ASI using a GPS (see the conversation of Sep 2000), now with 4 GPS tracks.. Two spreadsheets, one for a Psion and one for a PC are packaged with an instruction file in IAS_utilities.zip (Right-click to download).

The PC spreadsheet is for Excel 5.  It contains more things than just the ASI stuff.  Please note that as supplied it contains many measured data figures relating to Dave's own aircraft.  These have been left in to give a better idea of how to use the sheet.  They should, of course, be deleted and replaced by your own measurements if you use it for your own machine.  [Popular Flying is the magazine of the PFA.]
