This year the competition more challenging for all regions entering a team, as the formal Cadet Selection process had meant many fencers were away on international duty. One region, Eastern, did not compete this year. Combined with the current bout of flu sweeping the country resulted in only three regions fielding a complete team. Heavy rain on the Saturday morning also played it’s part when Anton Howes was unable to get to the competition. His train was cancelled at Reading when all stations beyond that point were closed due to flooding. His presence was sorely missed and we were very sad that he was unable to join.
Due to these challenges Norman Golding asked the captains if they would agree to fencers doubling where required, so all regions had a fair chance.

Boys Foil
We had an experienced team who presented a strong front against all comers. They lost to only one region, London, and that was one the last hit, of the last bout. Ultimately they were only 6 victories short of the wining regions total with their 56 wins. Once again they displayed their fearlessness in the face of a tough opponent and came up smiling.

Boys Epee
This year we had an all new team and a young team. James demonstrated an exciting, flamboyant style with lovely hits to wrist that sabreurs would be proud of. Tom and Rory never quailed when standing before considerably taller opponents and gave them as good as they got. Rory had sustained a hit to the knee on the first day that caused him some discomfort but kept battling on to victory. He took a hit again on the Sunday which resulted in him reluctantly needing to sit out the last match, but Tom and James held ground, and they won. Tom maintained a feistiness and determination at all times ready to face whatever the timetable produced next. They worked well, looking out for each other, and we hope they will be back for more next year.

Boys Sabre
Michael Salter and Anton Howes were our team, as many fencers went to Goppingen, just their names were enough to cause other captains to pause for thought. Saturday morning, however, came with heavy rain and prevented Anton from being there. Michael didn’t let this slow him down and stepped up to the mark. The stats don’t tell the truth and make seemingly depressing reading, until the fact is noted that Michael competed against complete teams. Although the South East conceded 6 victories at the start of each match, Michael did not. He not only won every bout he fought in, he also took the only individual trophy in the competition for the fencer with the most victories.

Girls Foil
This was one of our incomplete teams and thanks to the allowance for this year only of doubling we were able to put up a good fight. Claire and Sarah held steady for much of the weekend, whilst Chiara made up the team where the timetable would allow. Sarah was fencing left handed following an injury earlier this year to her right hand, but didn’t allow this to slow her down.

Girls Epee
Again this was an incomplete team and Charlotte was at her first Cadet Winton, with hopefully many more years to come. Chiara, also on her first Winton, agreed to fence epee with Claire joining them when the timetable would allow. Between them they lost to only the one region, Yorkshire, and were only 6 victories behind the eventual weapon winners.

Girls Sabre
Our three girls sabreurs, Julia, Jemima and Megan, were all at their first Cadet Winton. They got off to a cracking start with a victory over the eventual Cadet Winton winners and didn’t let up all weekend, notching up two 9-0 whitewashes on their way to a very respectable 47 victories total, leaving them only 5 wins short of the winning team’s total.
