Chilworth Contra Summary
What is Contra Dancing? you ask.
Try this, or
this viewpoint from across the 'pond', although we do things slightly differently in the UK.
At Chilworth we dance to CDs with the occasional visit from 'The English Contra Dance Band'.
The music is great, very lively and really gives you that drive which is so important for Contra Dancing in particular.
We dance New England Contras & Squares, with lots of swinging! and occasionally some 'Running Set' too. We welcome everyone, but don’t come to rest; it’s an exhausting evening!
To give you a flavour of this, it’s purposeful, urgent, vital, energetic, well phrased, strongly connected, challenging, sociable and great fun!
We change partners almost every dance, helping newcomers to be quickly assimilated, as well as creating a friendly and sociable environment.
Ladies invite the men to dance as well as vice versa.
Each dance can run for up to 12 to 14 times through compared to the ‘English’ norm of 7 to 9 times, so don't come to rest!
