The Real Java 2010 Post Tour Proposal

updated 26 March

Pagottan Mill, Madiun

If you are considering The Real Java Sugar Steam Loco Tour 2010, you may also like to think about:

Java 2010 - the Post Tour 'Return to Jakarta'

The main tour finishes in Situbondo (or at Surabaya airport) in the east of Java on 2 August. Join me for an escorted return to Jakarta using one of the tour buses so you can have a second chance at the mills which still use steam locos and a chance to visit several mills with interesting diesels. Your Indonesian visa is good for 30 days so why not make good use of it with this 7-day extension which will deliver you to Jakarta on 8 August (afternoon/evening) for your flight home anytime on 9 August.

August 2
Via Gending* and Gempolkrep* mills to Kediri

August 3
via Merican and Mojopanggung* mills to Madiun (for 2 nights)

August 4
Madiun area mills

August 5
via Purwodadi+, Sudhono+ and Tasik Madu mills to Solo (+possibly brief stops to see what is happening in the truck yard without an official mill visit)

August 6
via Sragi mill to Tegal (for 2 nights)

August 7
Sumberharjo, Pangka mills (or Sragi mill instead of one of these)

August 8
via Jatibarang* mill to Jakarta, post tour ends with dinner tonight

Mills marked * are diesel mills, of these Gempolkrep and Jatibarang used steam in 2008 but not in 2009 so there is a slim chance of a steam revival there.

Note that although we will have our own bus, it would be possible to include various train rides such as Probolinggo – Kediri (via Surabaya), Kediri – Madiun, Madiun - Solo and Tegal - Jakarta but to do this you will need to travel unescorted and fit in with the plans of the bus-based tour. Your luggage can be carried by bus to the next hotel but you may need to take a taxi either end to/from the stations. The cost of such rail trips would be covered in the post-tour fee (as you will be missing some sugar mills) and assistance would be provided (where practical) to obtain train tickets but you will miss some steam and diesel mills en route if you chose to do this.

If the chance to re-visit any particularly good steam locations and/or locations which were not operating normally as well as a few diesel mills plus a leisurely overland trip back to Jakarta with a small group appeals, the post-tour option could be for you.

The cost of the post-tour option will be £600 (single room supplement £75). This will include all transport, accommodation (on a twin sharing basis) and food. The final hotel in Jakarta (which some will require for 8 August) and the airport transfer are not included in this price but accommodation should be available at the tour hotel we used at the beginning of the tour and we can book this for you.
