Golden Thyme DNA Study
In 1999 Dr. Madan Thangavelu and I carried out the Golden Thyme DNA Study, which demonstrated that our native
golden leaved thymes should be regarded as Thymus pulegioides rather than T. citriodorus.
DNA profiles for the Golden Thyme DNA Study, demonstrating that the golden leaved lemon
scented thymes (Group 4) belong in Thymus pulegioides (Group 6) and not in T. citriodorus hort. (Group 3)
Tree using DNA profiles from the Golden Thyme DNA Study, demonstrating that T. citriodorus hort.,
now known as T. 'Culinary Lemon' and its cultivars, are distinct from the species T. pulegioides and T. vulgaris
and that the lemon scented, golden leaved thymes should be regarded as T. pulegioides.
