Thymus Synonyms

For many years there has been a considerable amount of muddle in the naming of thymes and for more than ten years I have been involved in trying to sort out this muddle.

The following list of synonyms has been compiled as a result of my research into old catalogues, checking names given by the raisers of new cultivars.  It includes new names given to thymes which have now been placed in their correct species following DNA studies.  Herbarium specimens have been checked at the Natural History Museum, London and at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.  Many species available in the trade have been found to be inaccurately named.  As a result of research botanists have changed the names of common species several times, particularly of the creeping thymes and these names are also listed.  Many nurseries, particularly those in Europe and North America, are still using the old names.

All new names are listed in the RHS Plant Finder and my synonym list is compiled so that nurseries and gardeners growing thyme have a readily accessible checklist.  I would welcome any comments as to names which should be added.  Please note that I have only included the species that are generally available!  (Most species have at least one synonym and some have as many as 6 or more!  Inclusion of these would make the list too long and they are only of academic interest.)
